Different Types of Parsley

There are many different types of parsley available on the market today. Which one should you buy?

Parsley is an herb that can be commonly found in NTUC Fairprice, Sheng Siong or online grocers like Redmart or Amazon Fresh. This herb that has been used for centuries in cooking and medicine. It contains vitamins C and K, iron, calcium, fiber, and antioxidants.

Here's what you need to know about each type. There are three main types of parsley: Chinese, Flat leaf or Italian, and English. Each type has its own benefits and uses.

Chinese Parsley

Aka Coriander/ Cilantro/ xiāng cài

Commonly used in Asian cooking for its aromatic fragrance. Also seen alot as a garnish in our local hawker food.

Italian Parsley

Aka flat-leaf parsley

Bigger and broader leaves than Chinese parsley and is the parsley called for in most western style recipes. Works great with butter, lemon, or garlic. Commonly chopped fresh and sprinkled over pasta.

English Parsley

It has thicker ruffled, “curly” leaves and carries a muted flavour that reminds you of grass.

Rather than for flavour, it's mostly used as a garnish in soups, roasts and buffet platters.
