Easily one of the most important items in any home’s kitchen, kitchen towels are an essential part of any routine. Whether you’re using them to dry your hands after washing, to clean up spills, or even as cloth napkins at dinner, there are some things you should know about kitchen towels that will keep them working well and looking good for longer – and we’re here to tell you all about it!
What are kitchen towels?
It may seem strange, but a lot of people don’t know what kitchen towels are or what they do. Kitchen towels are specifically made to be used for cleaning up in your kitchen. They come in a variety of styles and materials, which we’ll get into later in our guide to choosing a good one.
Types of Kitchen Towels
Kitchen towels are often made of linen, cloth, or terry. Linen is an ideal fabric for kitchen towels because it’s absorbent and extremely durable. Cloth kitchen towels are less expensive than linen but aren’t as absorbent or durable; therefore, they can get worn out faster.
- Chef Towels
- Cloth kitchen towels come in two main kinds, waffle weave and terry cloth. While many people think of terry cloth as your standard kitchen towel, it actually makes a terrible drying towel. Due to its loose structure, it’s very slow at drying things.
- Dish Towels
- While you might find them in a range of colors and designs, tea towels are typically white and were traditionally used to dry dishes. They work well for drying hands and other items around your kitchen, but avoid using them for any food preparation or eating purposes.
- Tea Towels
- Tea towels often used to dry plates, cutlery, glasses and other tableware after cleaning up. These are very commonly found in most kitchens today. What many people do not know is that they can be used for more than just drying dishes. Tea towels are made with very absorbent materials which means they are good at absorbing spills or preventing accidents caused by spillage.
What Not to Use Kitchen Towels For
- Cleaning Up Raw Meat
- When you’re cooking raw meat, poultry or fish, don’t use your kitchen towels to wipe up spills. Instead, do one of two things: Either use paper towels or throw down some newspaper first (to catch spills), then cover it with a clean towel (to dry your hands). The reason? Certain germs like Salmonella and E. coli can live on towels for days.
- Wiping Up the Sink
- Contrary to what most people believe, kitchen towels should not be used for cleaning up anything that is wet and/or greasy. This is because they're most prone to harboring bacteria and spreading it around your kitchen, if they haven't already picked up enough of it for themselves to begin with. If you’re looking for a way to sanitize your sink, opt for an all-purpose cleaner rather than kitchen towels; these are best at cutting through grease and getting rid of dirt.
What to Look for in a Kitchen Towel
- Size
- The first thing you should look for when shopping for kitchen towels is size. A towel that’s too small may not cover your largest pots and pans. The same goes for one that’s too big, which can be wasteful if it takes up counter space or has to be washed multiple times before it comes clean (this applies to all other towels in your home, as well). Choose a towel that will reach across your largest pots but leave enough left over to grab your smallest glasses without using two hands. We have designed our kitchen towels to do just that!
- Density
- The biggest factor you need to look for in a kitchen towel is its density. If you’re going to be using your kitchen towels daily, every day, you don’t want to constantly have to replace them because they can’t withstand multiple washings. A good dense fabric will allow you plenty of use before having to make a new purchase. The higher a towel’s density, or weight, generally indicates greater quality. A more dense towel usually lasts longer as well because towels get washed quite frequently.
- Style
- If you're like most people, style is one of your top priorities when looking for kitchen towels. There are literally thousands of different designs to choose from, so make sure you pick out something that's both stylish and functional! Why You Should Avoid Cheap Kitchen Towels
Cheap kitchen towels are typically made of synthetic fibers like polyester or rayon. These types of fabrics can hold onto allergens like dust, pet dander, and other irritants that you really don’t want to be around while you’re cooking. They also tend to pill over time, which means they end up shedding little particles of fabric into your food while you work. This isn’t good for you or your guests!
